Doctor Hero, hidden away in his workroom, stared at his reflection in the mirror. He tugged nervously at the tux he was wearing, trying to make everything sit just right. The back garden was already set up for the ceremony. He had clothes packed for the honeymoon. His escape plan on speed-dial on the phone in his pocket. Mentally, he ran through his checklist again. Everything seemed to be set.
Taking a deep breath, he headed out of the room and down to the garden.
Arthur was more excited than nervous surprisingly. What was there to be nervous about? He had gone through worse things than this before, and this was supposed to be the happiest days of their lives. He smiled and straightened out his tux again for what seemed the one millionth time. He left his packed clothes in Alfred’s room this morning without the other noticing so they were both prepared for their honeymoon. Everything was just perfect.
He smiled one last time before taking a deep, happy breath and making his way out of the ward and towards the garden.
Alfred stood at the end of aisle, next to the priest. He looked over the garden and group of guests that had arrived. His attention, though, didn’t stray much from the other end of the aisle.
Arthur found the door to the garden and took a deep breath before entering the door slowly and walking down the aisle slowly. He found the weather to be perfect, the sun hitting him perfectly, the green of his eyes almost appearing to shine and making his hair almost seem to shine too. He had tried to groom it for the occasion, but he found the messy blonde to be just perfect. He waked up, standing by the priest and smiling at Alfred. “You look perfect you know.” He whispered to the other.
He watched Arthur walk down the aisle. This almost seemed more like a dream. Everything was perfect. “Same to you.”
He took the other male’s hand in his own with a smile before turning his attention to the priest.
Erik was smiling and watching the two before looking down to his book opening it and began reading. “Dearly beloved: We have come together in the presence of God to witness and bless the joining together of these two men in Holy Matrimony. The bond and covenant of marriage was established by God in creation, and our Lord Jesus Christ adorned this manner of life by his presence and first miracle at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. It signifies to us the mystery of the union between Christ and his Church, and Holy Scripture commends it to be honored among all people.
The union of husband and wife in heart, body, and mind is intended by God for their mutual joy; for the help and comfort given one another in prosperity and adversity; and, when it is God’s will, for the procreation of children and their nurture in the knowledge and love of the Lord. Therefore marriage is not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, deliberately, and in accordance with the purposes for which it was instituted by God.
Into this holy union Alfred F. Jones and Arthur Kirkland now come to be joined. If any of you can show just cause why they may not lawfully be married, speak now; or else for ever hold your peace.
I require and charge you both, here in the presence of God, that if either of you know any reason why you may not be united in marriage lawfully, and in accordance with God’s Word, you do now confess it.”
The man waited a couple of seconds in case anyone wanted to speak up before continuing on.
The priest turns to face Arthur, and flipped a page in his book.
“Arthur Kirkland will you have this man to be your husband; to live together in the covenant of marriage? Will you love him, comfort him, honor and keep him, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all others, be faithful to him as long as you both shall live?”
Arthur waited a bit impatiently. He almost wished they didn’t have to go through all this so Alfred and him could kiss and then be whisked away to their honeymoon. But he had to, so he stayed still, holding Alfred’s hand, a wide grin on his face. He nodded at what he had said. “I do.”
